Champion Lewis Hamilton gets behind the steering wheel of the Mercedes-AMG ONE and drives off. No, don’t worry, you did not miss the sales release of the company’s hypercar. It is just a teaser for the future model. The new marketing campaign “After Work” has started.
The curtain has dropped on the stage of the 2020 Formula One season. A season in which Lewis Hamilton crowned himself a World Champion for the seventh time. Once he completes the interviews after the race, he walks to the paddock and drives off. It is not his W11 that he drives. The racing car is going into retirement after a last race that the Brit finished third, behind his teammate Valtteri Bottas, following his coronavirus infection recovery. But a new star is born. It is the Mercedes-AMG ONE.
New data breaks cover. The hypercar features an R+ button on the steering wheel. The tail wing rises at the rear, an extra wing extends and air flaps pop up on the hood.
“Ok, Lewis, the track is clear for testing”, the pro driver hears. Lewis presses the throttle pedal and off he goes.
“I can still hardly believe that there will soon be a hypercar with a Formula 1 hybrid powetrain. We won the world championship with this engine in 2015 and I was involved in its development for a long time. This car is absolutely unique,” said Lewis Hamilton during the filmwork.
When will the Mercedes-AMG ONE be ready for the road?
“Be prepared for Formula 1 hybrid technology on the street”, is the message that shows up in the 1 minute and 20 seconds film. The fans of the brand have been prepared for a while.
The car that shows up in the teaser video is just a prototype. The real thing will be revealed next year, with deliveries starting in the second half of 2021. Mercedes is behind schedule with the development and deliver of its first hypercar, due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Developed with the experts at the Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains in Brixworth, England, the hypercar will come with a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine that also powers the Formula 1 racing cars that have won the Constructors Championship in Formula One for the past seven years. It operates together with three electric motors for a total output of more than 1,000 horsepower. The top speed will exceed 350 km/h. It is a street-legal racer after all.
