What is a drag race? A competition where two cars line up at a start point and start off at a given command. The winner is the one that reaches the finish line first. So we’ve got the Mercedes-AMG GT R and the Renault Twizy for this. Is this what could be called a drag race?
Considering that the tiny Twizy is not even a car, but a quadricycle, we can make things meet half way. But what happens if the cars lined up at the start point drive in opposite directions?
So here they are: the all-electric Renault Twizy Dynamique, weighing less than half a ton (992 lbs) and owning 17 horsepower (13 kW) and 57 Nm (42 lb-ft) of torque. Not quite a racer isn’t it?
And right next to it, there is the Mercedes-AMG GT R, introduced in the summer of 2016, weighing 1,630 kilograms (3,594 lbs) and getting 585 horsepower (430 kW) and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) of torque, delivered by its 4.0-liter V8 engine. It only needs 3.6 seconds to hit 100 km/h (62 mph) from a standstill, while the French tiny electric can’t even reach such a speed, as it stops at only 80 km/h (50 mph). The top speed of the Green Beast takes speed dial to 318 km/h.
Everything seems to be going against the quadricycle. And yet, does it even stand a chance? Why is it taking this bold challenge? It is only because the GT R accepts its condition: driving in reverse. The German sports car has a reverse top speed limited at 61 km/h (38 mph). And even so, would you dare put your money on the Twizy?
