Iconic Mercedes-Benz models run from a standstill to 60 mph in a breath-taking test run. The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing, the Mercedes-Benz G 500 4×42 and several in between will have a go at it.
10 classic and iconic Mercedes-Benz models. The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing, estimated at 2.5 million euros is among them. Instead of saving the best for last, Mat Watson of CarWow starts the test in the boldest way possible. “Do not crash this car. It is very expensive”, the engineers told him before he sat behind the steering wheel of the 5.5-liter V8-powered Gullwing. It takes the precious automobile 9.4 seconds to hit 60 mph.
There comes the C111 study car. Only 13 of them rolled off the assembly line. Customers sent blank checks trying to get one. None was then for sale. Today it runs from a standstill to 60 mph in 10.28 seconds.
It is then the turn of the Mercedes-Benz 600 Pullman, a luxury limousine that only kings, presidents and popes could get their hands on. Mat Watson is only a VIP passenger in this one. The 6.3-liter V8 won’t take the car faster than 17.67 seconds.
The 230 E is though faster. One of the 2.4 million units were sold in a 10-year life span. The 2.3-liter 4-cylinder petrol engine driving the rear wheels via a 3-speed automatic gearbox makes it run from a standstill to 60 mph in 12.80 seconds.
The high-performance Mercedes-Benz 300 CE AMG with a 6.0-liter engine was “The Hammer” in 1988 when it came into the world. Today it hammers the tarmac from 0 to 60 mph in 7.87 seconds.
There comes the 190 E 2.5-16 Evolution from 1990, a road version of the DTM model. 8.35 seconds are enough for it to go from 0 to 60 mph.
The iconic Mercedes-Benz 560 SEC is the smooth operator
The luxurious 1990’s Mercedes-Benz 560 SEC with a 5.5-liter V8 engine will do the job in 7.24 seconds, which makes it the fastest so far.
The Mercedes-Benz CLK AMG Coupe, with a 5.5-liter supercharged V8, one of the 100 ever made, will rob it of the title though, with its only 4.39 seconds, figures to match those of the supercars of today.
The CL 65 AMG has got a twinturbo V12 with 612 horsepower and 1,000 Nm of torque to fight back. It it takes 4.97 seconds.
A Mercedes-Benz G 500 4×42 with its 4.0-liter V8 and its 3-ton weight has a go at it as well. It’s 6.97 seconds for the neon yellow behemoth.
