It seems that it is the final count down for the Mercedes-AMG SL65. An insider speaking for MB Passion Blog claims that the car is set to die off this upcoming June, taking its V12 engine with it.
The production of the V12 is set to end in May, before the company will officially retire the model in the first month of summer. The 621-horsepower SL65, most powerful in the history of the model, will though let the toned-down SL standard variant live on.
The car might make an impressive comeback with more power, once the 6.0-liter V12 is gone. The next-generation SL should make its debut sometime in the beginning of the next decade, as an AMG-developed model. Instead of the SL65 designation, the top-of-the-range model will feature the SL73 nameplate at the rear. It is only logical that the car will be powered by the company’s 4.0-liter V8 engine, paired with an electric motor that provides extra output and extra torque. The system will be able to develop in excess of 800 horsepower.
Mercedes is also planning on fitting to extra seats in the convertible, converting it into a sporty grand touring model. A soft-top roof is in the cards as well.
Starting this summer, the V12 will be strictly reserved for the Maybach exclusive family.
