When February comes it means that Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week is just around the corner. And with almost 100,000 people taking part each year at the event and so many eyes fixed to the runway, the fashion industry has the perfect chance to make a global statement.
Despite being a trendsetter, New York Fashion Week has fallen behind concerning one of the most important “trends”, meaning sustainability. Sadly, besides “The Green Shows” (a collection of sustainable designers that showed in New York Fashion Week 2012) there has been little to no mention about sustainability on one of the biggest stages of fashion.
But sustainability isn’t the highlight of this Fashion Week. It seems like this season, New York Fashion Week welcomes participants and models of every background.
On the runway you can see more ethnicities, gender identities, sexual orientation, sizes and abilities, many more than ever before. Now, the fashion industry welcomes models like Winnie Harlow, who suffers from vitiligo. And she is just one example. Jamie Brewer, the first model with Down syndrome to walk the runway or Laverne Cox, an actress and transgender advocate, models of all sizes or disabled models for FTL Moda.
During the New York Fashion Week, one of the most famous designers worldwide known, Carolina Herrera, created a collection of 46 pieces that were inspired by her love for water, as she recreated the aquatic theme with shapes, colors and patterns. The famous designer commented that each dress creates a different movement, similar to waves, and even though they seem to have heavy structure, she made sure that every piece had the ability to move. New York Fashion Week will end on 19th February.
