From Santa Cruz to Big Sur in California. Not a long drive, but why not make it last? It would take less than two hours to drive all the 78 miles. But the road is just too beautiful and the Mercedes-Benz E 350 is too comfortable, so anybody would try to make the trip longer.
Bloggers Doriana and Jeff Hammond have planned their road trip along the coastal road over a cup of coffee, savouring the bitter sweet aroma.
And off they go… Taking the Highway 1 along Monterey Bay, heading for Carmel-by-the-Sea, they enjoy the view of the land that famous actor Clint Eastwood and writer Ernest Hemingway made a home of.
With cameras ready for the breathtaking road along the Bixby Bridge, the adventurers capture the art deco concrete construction and the emerald water beneath it. Bixby is the world’s highest bridge without intermediate supporting columns.
How about spending a night in the forest? “It’s not scary at all, it is absolutely wonderful”, says Jeff. And to do just that, the travelers choose the Ripplewood Resort, falling small among the sky-high trees, right on the river bank. With no artificial light interfering, they find a new dimension of the starred sky of California, on the porch of the forest wooden hut.
A stop at the Big Sur Bakery for a refill, not for the car, but for the occupants, they start off again. Still about 20 miles to go and they have to be there on time, to watch the sun setting down into the ocean at Pfeiffer State Beach. The waves smash into the cliffs, feeling the crimson air with salt.
“When the sun goes down in the evening, many tourists gather to see how the light momentarily breaks an opening in the rock”, says Doriana.
A perfect end for a perfect road trip onboard the Mercedes-Benz E 350.
