The Mercedes EQC is subject to a recall that the premium car maker recently issued, regarding a possible steering failure. More than 19,000 units are involved in the move.

Mercedes-Benz issued a recall for the first member of the EQ family, the EQC electric SUV. The carmaker points out that a power steering failure could suddenly rising, thus increasing the risk of an accident. No such incident has yet been reported, but the company is getting ready to start the prevention move.

Mercedes forwards no information on the exact number of cars involved. But according to the ar-recalls.eu website, quoted by Autocar.co.uk, the recall targets units that rolled off the assembly line between 11 December 2019 and 18 May 2020.

The same source indicates that 3,073 of the vehicles are under the ownership of customers in Germany.

“Mercedes-Benz AG has determined that on certain EQC vehicles (293 platform), the wiring harness of the electrical steering might have been damaged during the assembly process. In this case, water might ingress into the wiring harness through a damaged isolation and advance over time into the steering control unit. As a consequence, the steering assist might fail spontaneously, also during driving”, a company representative stated for Autocar. In this case, a red warning message should start blinking in the instrument cluster.

The Mercedes EQC has been subject to several recalls since its launch

This is far from being the first time a recall targets the EQC. Mercedes issued other five such actions since its launch more than two years ago. They regarded weak front differential bolts, non-compliant seatback locks, corroded battery housings and improperly mounted airbag nuts. The eCall function has also been the subject of a recall earlier this year in the United States and Europe. The emergency services alert function might transmit the wrong location in the event of a crash.
