The Mercedes-Maybach S 580 e is the first Plug-in Hybrid in the brand’s history and takes over the PHEV system from the S 580 e offering 510 ps (503 hp) distributed to the rear axle.
Rising taxes penalizing excessive weight and emissions have prompted Mercedes to offer a PHEV version for the Mercedes-Maybach sub-brand for the first time. Until now, the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class was available only with turbocharged V8 and V12 engines with very high emissions of 236 g/km CO2 and 306 g/km CO2, respectively.
Thus, the new Maybach S 580 e takes over unchanged the powertrain system of the Mercedes S 580 e consisting of the 3-liter inline 6-cylinder turbo engine with 367 ps (362 hp) and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) combined with an electric motor with 150 ps (148 hp) and 440 Nm (324.5 lb-ft) integrated between the combustion engine and the 9-speed automatic transmission. The combination delivers a total of 510 ps (503 hp) and 750 Nm (553 lb-ft).
Like the S 580 e, Mercedes-Maybach S 580 e is a rear-wheel drive model only, and the 28.6 kWh gross (21.5 kWh net) battery gives an electric range of 100 km (62 miles). In addition, Mercedes is one of the few manufacturers to offer fast charging at AC stations up to 11 kW and DC stations up to 60 kW. The 28.6 kWh battery charges from 0 to 80% in just 20 minutes. The top speed in electric mode is 140 kph (86 mph).
Although the Mercedes-Maybach S 580 e is 180 mm (7.08 inch) longer and slightly heavier than the extended wheelbase version of the S 580 e, it accelerates faster to 100 kph (62 miles) in just 5.1 seconds compared to 5.2 seconds for the S 580 e.
Daniel Lescow, head of Mercedes-Maybach, said the Mercedes-Maybach S 580 e is the brand’s first step into the electric future of the brand, and in 2023 Mercedes-Maybach will present its first fully electric model.
Mercedes-Maybach S 580 e will be available first in China, followed by Thailand, Europe, and other countries. 2022 was the best year in Mercedes-Maybach history, with 21,600 cars delivered to customers, which represents an increase of 37% over the previous year.
