After a year of declining sales due to lockdown periods in the world’s major markets, Mercedes sales have recovered. The premium brand sold 1,182,724 units in the first 6 months of 2021, 25.1% more than in the same period in 2020.
Mercedes sales have grown dramatically around the world. In China, Mercedes registered two new records: The highest deliveries in a second quarter (219,059 units, + 5.8%) and in a first half of a year (441,579 units, + 27.6%). In the second quarter, sales registered a double-digit increase in the USA (+ 38.6%) and Germany (+ 26.3%).
PHEV and electric models have seen a spectacular increase, with sales more than fourfold in the first six months of 2021 to 121,500 units (+ 305%). 10.3% of total sales in the first 6 months were represented by PHEV and electric models.
Of the 121,500 PHEV and electrical units, 39,000 units were electrical (+ 291.4%). Of the 39,000, more than 19,000 were EQA, EQC and EQV. We estimate that sales of electric models will increase even more with the launch of the new EQS luxury limousine which will soon be followed by EQE and the luxury EQE SUV and EQS SUV.
Growth in all regions of the world
Sales of Mercedes-Benz in the Asia-Pacific region rose from January to June 26.1%. The main market is China with 441,579 units sold in the first half of 2021.
In Europe, the increase for the first 6 months was 22.4% to a total of 383,616 units. However, the German market registered a very small progress of only 1%. The explanation lies in the fact that sales in Germany did not collapse last year as much as those in Spain, France and Italy where the lockdown period was much longer and more restrictive.
And in North America, sales increased by 24.4% due to the return especially of the US market where the increase was 26.3% to 160,646 units.
