Mercedes sold more luxury and sports models than electric models in Q1 of 2023

Mercedes sold 503,000 units in the first quarter of 2023, 3% more than in 2022. Of these, 91,800 were AMG, G-Class, and Maybach models, and 51,800 were electric.

Despite the semiconductor and other raw materials crises, Mercedes sold 503,000 units in the first quarter of 2023, 3% more than the same period in 2022 when it sold 487,000 units. Sales of electric models also rose dramatically to 51,600 units, 89% more than in the same period in 2022. Thus, more than 10% of all sales were of electric cars. But Mercedes sold far more superluxury models in the first quarter than electrics. 91,800 AMG, Maybach, and G-Class units were sold in the first quarter of 2023, an 18% increase.

Here are sales by segment.

Top-End segment
Mercedes sold 91,800 units (+18%) in the first quarter. All luxury divisions saw significant increases. Mercedes-AMG sales were up 44% to 40,300 units, and G-Class sales were up 23% to 10,200 units. Mercedes-Maybach sales also increased by 8% to 6,700 units, thanks to a substantial increase in sales of the Mercedes-Maybach GLS (+46%).

Maybach sales will be boosted by the launch of the new PHEV Mercedes-Maybach S 580 e and electric Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV, which will be unveiled in a few days at the Shanghai Motor Show.
In the Top-End segment, GLS sales are up 11% to 15,900 units, although the GLS is ahead of a facelift that was unveiled recently. Mercedes EQS SUV sales also got off to a promising start with 5,500 units.

Core-segment
Due to the GLC and E-Class generation swap, core-segment sales were down 11% to 248,400 units. The new Mercedes GLC has been launched in Europe and will be introduced in other markets along with the new GLC Coupe version. The new Mercedes E-Class will be unveiled on 25 April.

Mercedes C-Class sales were up 34% to 80,800 units, while E-Class sales were 73,300 (-6%). The new Mercedes EQE electric limousine sold 9,400 units. Sales of the Mercedes GLE also fell 5% to 48,800 units, but the GLE will also be available with a facelift.

Entry-segment
Sales in the Entry-segment increased by 27% to 163,300 units due to increased sales of Mercedes GLB (37,500 units, +52%) and Mercedes GLA (34,500 units, +25%). Mercedes also sold 11,200 Mercedes EQB (+189%) and 10,800 Mercedes EQA (+64%). In addition, Mercedes GLA, GLB, and CLA have recently received a facelift.

Sales by regions
In Europe, sales increased by 8% to 163,900 units thanks to increases in Germany (+21%), Belgium (+17%), Italy (+22%), and Spain (+28%). Sales of electric cars increased by 41%, representing 17% of European sales.

In Asia, Mercedes sold 247,700 units (+3%), with a 3% increase in China. In China, sales of High-End models increased by 1% to 20,500 units thanks to outstanding results for Mercedes GLS (4,500 units, +17%) and G-Class (1,600 units, +71%). In the Core segment, the best seller was the E-Class with 48,700 units (+11%).

In North America, sales increased by 1%, with the most significant increase in the Top-End segment (27,900 units, +29%). Sales of AMG models increased by 69% and G-Class by 46%, while Mercedes-Maybach sales tripled (+232%).

Mercedes’ decision to withdraw from Russia influenced sales in the rest of the world, which lost around 10,000 sales because of retirement from the Russian market.
