The new Mercedes-Benz E-Class might get one more award, if there is any room left in its trophies window. The most intelligent business sedan ever built has just made it to the short list of the safest cars of 2017, drawn out by “What Car?”
The Audi Q2, the Seat Ateca and the Alfa Romeo Giulia are three of the cars the E-Class is fighting against in the arena of the safest cars. The winner shall be announced next January.
The Safety Award committee will designate, together with Thatcham Research, the safest new car that is currently on the market in the United Kingdom. The short list includes 10 finalists, selected according to the 2016 Euro NCAP tests ratings, all of them complying with the standards imposed for qualifying for the award.
The tests considered by “What Car?” Are based on track testing of collision avoidance systems, as well as thorough analysis of each car’s Euro NCAP crash test result.
For all cars that reached this stage of the competition, it is mandatory to be fitted as standard with various safety systems: AEB (Autonomous Emergency Braking), lane keeping technology and Pedestrian Detection. The cars are also judged according to their market relevance and value for money.
Two hybrid vehicles made it to Top 10: the Toyota Prius and the Hyundai Ioniq. The presence of the two small SUVs on the list shows the popularity of this segment in the United Kingdom.
Last year, the Volvo XC90 was designated the safest new car. This year’s favorite is the Mercedes-Benz E-Class. This is the list of the ten finalists:
