You might want to sit on your hands so that you don’t start writing hate e-mails to the journalist at Auto Express. The guys at the British media outfit got the chance to ride in the all new Mercedes-AMG GT. And that’s not all. It wasn’t just any AMG GT, it was the S model. And the man doing the driving wasn’t just any man, it was Bernd Schneider, a man whose accomplishments in motorsport take a lot of space to list – so we’ll only mention the five times he won the DTM.
We won’t tell you all the details but we will say this: it’s all good news. The designers and engineers in Stuttgart seem to have got it right again and the new Mercedes-AMG GT promises to be a milestone in the company’s history. It’s both a sports car and, as its name suggests, a Gran Turismo, a feat very hard to achieve that a lot of companies strive for.
I’m sure Bernd Schneider has the ability to make even a mildly decent car seem epic, but the fellow editors at Auto Express are convinced it wasn’t just the skill of the driver at work, but also a beautifully crafted car that left such a strong impression on them.
The Mercedes-AMG GT is expected to fight it out against the likes of Porsche 911 (GTS or Turbo), Audi R8 V10 (two more cylinders, a lot less style) or the Jaguar F-Type R Coupe (equally raucous but not as well mannered). It’s got a strong opposition to face but it looks like its main rival shares the same home-town: the Stuttgart based Porsche have the biggest chance of rising up to the high bar set by the new Mercedes-AMG GT.
