A beauty with a background to die for and looks to turn all heads at once has just been purchased at an auction in Johannesburg, South Africa. Who is the lucky owner of this 1958 Mercedes-Benz 220S Coupe? That stays top secret for the moment.

The owner wants no invasion of privacy, since he also prefers to keep his wealth behind closed doors. All we know for the moment is that he paid R1.67-million (111,706.30 euros or 119,071.00 USD) to get this wheeled treasure, the 1958 Mercedes-Benz 220S Coupe in his garage.

Stephan Welz & Co car specialist, Jack Rosewitz, told the media that “The car sold at auction was imported into South Africa in 1958, as a special order for Mrs. Mary Oppenheimer.” She is the daughter of Bridget Oppenheimer, an icon in the South African business industry. She sold the car soon after purchasing it. Unlike other such automobiles, that are used to passing from one car collector to another, the Mercedes-Benz 220S Coupe was kept by its second owners, the very well-heeled South African Prowse family, until early 2000s.

Mercedes-Benz built 1251 of its 220S model in Coupe guise and even fewer were came with a right-hand drive. Several such vehicles were purchased by aristocracy, famous actors and politicians more than six decades ago. Even King Juan Carlos of Spain was given one as a gift by his father

Together with the 220S Coupe, other classics went under hammer. A 1968 Triumph TR5 P1 and a 1971 Rolls Royce Corniche also found new owners.
