The Mercedes C 63 AMG that Michael Schumacher drove when he signed with the three-pointed star Formula 1 team sold terribly cheap. The auction house was hoping to fetch between €50,000 and €100,000.
That would have been anywhere between $57,000 and $110,000. But that is far from what Bonhams actually got for the 2010 model chassis number WDD2042771F456156.
Michael Schumacher received the car when he joined Mercedes-AMG Petronas in January 2010, exactly 12 years ago. He drove it until the 28th of July. From 2011 to 2015, the car belonged to a Swiss gentleman. He is the one responsible for most part of the mileage. Six years ago, it arrived in the garage of a Mercedes-Benz engineer with 146,278 kilometers (90,892 miles) on board. The odometer currently reads a little below 152,000 kilometers (94,448 miles). The engineer was the one who equipped the car with band new wheels and only added around 1,000 kilometers (621 miles).
Despite the fact that the seven-time Formula 1 World Champion Michael Schumacher drove it, the Mercedes C 63 AMG sold cheap. The price was way below what the auction house was hoping to get. The hammer dropped on January 3rd in Paris, at Les Grandes Marques du Monde auction that took place at the Grand Palais Ephemere. The highest bid was €27,600 ($31,551).
The current owner is getting a new set of tires and a thorough check carried out by a Mercedes-Benz dealer. Bonhams keep the name of the buyer under wraps, but they are probably dealing with a Michael Schumacher fan.
No official news has leaked for the past eight years regarding Schumi’s health. One of the few people still allowed to get near him is Jean Todt, former General Manager for Ferrari between 1994 and 2007. The French executive has just stepped down from his FIA executive position. He had been at the helm of motor racing for more than 12 years.
