With the new Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe just coming into the world, it is rumoured that the Stuttgart-based brand is planning yet another model: that would be the Mercedes-Benz GLC Cabriolet.

With the new Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe ready to fight the BMW’s X4, a drop-top SUV would be thrown into a battle with the Range Rover Evoque Cabriolet, the car that has been running the race by itself. The SUV with the folding top would naturally be based on its coupe sibling, just presented at the New York Car Show last week.

“It would be fun and it is actually not that much of an engineering challenge”, enthusiastically said Michael Keltz, chief engineer for the E-Class, CLS and GLC for Autocar magazine, admitting that he is a fan of the Evoque convertible himself. Mercedes-Benz has not had any convertible SUV since the company dropped the manufacturing of the roofless G-Class in 2013.

However, Keltz apparently stated that there is little space left in the Mercedes-Benz line up for a topless GLC at the moment and the appearance of such a model would mean the disappearance of another. The model is yet to be considered.

The new GLC Coupe will hit the showrooms in September 2016, with the GLC 43 4Matic Coupe top version good for 367 HP developed by its V6 biturbo engine. By next autumn, we will probably know for sure if the top shall drop for the SUV Coupe.
