The first photos of the future Mercedes-AMG SL Roadster reveal the Performance Luxury with 2+2 seats in “hyperanalogue” cockpit. The design finds inspiration in the iconic 300 SL Roadster.

The new model though will divert towards a sportier and maximum comfort. In order to achieve this, the premium car maker uses fine materials and confers attention to detail. The driver is in the center of the cockpit “planetarium”. The adjustable central display in the center console and the redesigned dimensional concept with 2+2 seating layout provides extra function and space.

Mercedes calls this mix of analogue geometry and digital world a “hyperanalogue”. For example, the fully digital instrument cluster is part of a three-dimensional visor.

“The SL is an icon of the brand with the three-pointed star: This roadster has stood for automotive fascination and desire for decades. A great opportunity and challenge for design, because every designer wants to create icons,” says Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer Daimler Group.

This is how Mercedes-AMG is able now to provide a revolutionary interior experience. The company speaks of the cockpit being “caught between digital and analogue luxury”. “We created the most iconic SL ever since, the luxury icon of the 20s”, Gorden Wagener adds.

Mercedes-AMG SL Roadster is going back to the 2+2 layout

A premiere for the model is the highly sophisticated dimensional concept of 2 + 2 seating configuration. It is the first time since 1989, when the R 129 rolled off the assembly line. With the presence of the rear seats, the SL Roadster is ever more versatile. People of up to only 1,50 meters tall could travel there though. When not in use, a draught-stop can protect front passengers from draughts at the back of the neck. The rear seats can also turn into storage space.

Mercedes provides a wide range of different covers for the sports or performance seats. Therefore, customers can tick the box for a single or a two-tone nappa leather with diamond stitching. A nappa leather – DINAMICA RACE microfiber combination and contrasting topstitching in yellow or red is also part of the offer.

The high-tech roadster

The instrument panel of the future roadster also finds inspiration in aviation. With an upper and lower section, it will feature the new galvanized turbine nozzles.

A 12.3-inch LCD instrument cluster provides the relevant driving data. It is not a free-standing unit, but integrated into a high-tech visor. It is a solution that Mercedes uses in order to prevent sunlight reflections, especially during open-air driving.

The NACA air intake transitions into the 11.9-inch infotainment touchscreen in portrait format. It floats between the two central turbine nozzles.  Also to avoid sunlight reflections, it electrically adjusts from leaning to more vertical.

The seats sport integrated headrests, enhancing the sporty proportions of the seating layout an luxury.

The car will also get the latest generation of the MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) system. Several AMG-specific elements will be added, such as the “Performance” or “Track” items. The driver can customize the appearance of the instrument cluster with different display styles and individually selectable main views. The optional head-up display will bring the necessary information into the field of view.

The Ambient Light frames in 64 different colors will emphasize the unique interior design of the future Mercedes-AMG SL Roadster.
