Days after the first ever Mercedes-Benz pick-up was caught testing in the humbler Nissan Navara shell, new details have emerged. A top-secret insider of the Australian website Autolog disclosed that the truck will be called Mercedes-Benz X-Class.

Also Z-Class is a name that is on the list, but the Mercedes-Benz reps seem favor the first option. The GLT moniker would not be completely out of their plans either. The insider also revealed important details about the pick-up set to share the same platform with its Japanese counterpart built by Nissan, but yet have its own design and parts.

  • a three model range (entry-level, mid- and high-trim versions) to cater for a wide range of customers.
  • two diesel engines (four- and six-cylinder units) borrowed from the Japanese car maker. No gasoline engine in the specification book.
  • a typically B-Class interior layout with an iPad-like display for the top of the line models.
  • the AMG trim in, the AMG version out.

The fake Nissan Navara NP300 caught spying last week was nothing less than the future Mercedes-Benz X-Class. To put some distance between the less costly sibling and the premium pick up, Mercedes is planning to offer it in a single chassis version with a dual cab.

“Yes, to come to an attractive price we are using a common platform, but all the rest is done by Mercedes – to design, to develop the vehicle specifically to meet Mercedes criteria”, said Daimler board member Thomas Weber at the 2016 Detroit Motor Show.

The Navara engines – a 2.3-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine with 140 HP (140 kW) will power the entry-level and the mid-trim version.

The top of the line variant will host the Nissan 4-cylinder diesel and the six-cylinder turbocharged diesel with 255 HP (190 kW).

Autoblog is estimating a $38,900 – $56,500 price range for the Mercedes-Benz pick-up set to be manufactured at the Nissan plants in both Argentina and Spain.
