Lewis Hamilton nominated for Laureus World Sportsman of the Year Award

Formula 1 world champion is honoured to be a nominee for the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year Award, up against stars like Christiano Ronaldo, Novak Djokovic or Rory Mcllroy.

World’s greatest sports stars have been nominated for the 2015 Laureus World Sports Awards and the winners will be revealed at the Awards Ceremony, which will take place in Shanghai, China on April 15. This is the first time these awards are being held in China.

The nominees for the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year Award are: Novak Djokovic, who replaced Rafael Nadal as the new tennis world No.1; the No.1 golfer in the world Rory Mcllroy, Spain’s World MotoGP champion Marc Marquez, Cristiano Ronaldo, Real Madrid superstar and winner of the Ballon D’or and World Player of the World award, Renaud Lavillenie, a French pole vaulter and, obviously, Formula One world champion, Lewis Hamilton.

In 2008, Lewis Hamilton won the Laureus Breakthrough of the Year award and he told laureus.com that “they’re all different sports and they all have different approaches and different strengths and weaknesses and, yes, I could only have ever dreamed at this period of time in my life to be up among them.”

Another category is Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year, followed by Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year Award where Serena Williams hopes for her fourth Laureus Award. The wheelchair racer, Tatyana McFadden is a favourite to win the Laureus Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability Award. The last two categories are Laureus World Comeback of the Year Award and Laureus World Action Sportsperson of the Year Award.

Among other sport celebrities who have previously been named as winners of Laureus Awards over the last 15 years have been Usain Bolt, Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Alex Ferguson, Lewis Hamilton, Yao Ming, Rafael Nadal, Pelé, Steve Redgrave, Ronaldo, Michael Schumacher, Serena Williams, Liu Xiang and Zinedine Zidane.
