The Mercedes-AMG G 63 fights… itself in a strange drag race. It is the duel time for the off-roading twins. So which one wins?
There is no way we’re giving a spoiler alert, so you will just have to read through or scroll down to the video to find out the winner. As strange as it may seem, a Mercedes-AMG G 63 fights a Mercedes-AMG G 63. It is not the cars that they mean to test. But the reactions of the driver.
The drivers are dealing with the latest generation of the G 63s, the model prior to the facelift, that has just been revealed. But they are not exactly identical. One of the two features 23-inch Vossen wheels and an aftermarket Urban body kit, especially designed to enhance aerodynamics. But will the massive wheels work against it?
CarWow’s Mat Watson and his car customization specialist friend, Yianni Charalambous, set up the duel of the reaction times. It was not the men driving, but their girlfriends! Yianni actually wants everyone to know it is his fiancée soon-to-be his wife driving.
It turned out that the G 63 with the special body kit was the winner. The red G 63, that actually belongs to Mat Watson, won the race with the rolling start in the third gear from 50 mph (80 km/h). It all came down to better gear shifting. Mat Watson’s girlfriend also won the brake test fight, even though she was actually driving 10 mph (16 km/h) faster than the pre-established 70-mph speed (112 km/h) speed.
The figures of the Mercedes-AMG G 63
The Mercedes-AMG G 63 comes with the AMG’s 4.0-liter twin turbo V8. The unit develops 585 horsepower. It takes only 4.5 seconds to run from a standstill to 62 mph (100 km/h). The figures are the more impressive as the G-wagon in its top-of-the-range variant weighs no less than 5,845 pounds (2,651 kilograms). Not quite a racer, is it? No one ever thought of one back in 1979, when the first G-Class rolled off the assembly line of the Magna Steyr plant in Austria. It is the place where the car is still being built today.
