Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains were honoured with the prestigious Dewar Trophy for its PU106A Hybrid Formula One Power Unit. The team was recognized for the development of the most advanced powertrain within the new Formula One regulations.
The Dewar Trophy is the most coveted award in British engineering and this year marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of Thomas Dewar and, nonetheless, 120 years of motorsport history for Mercedes-Benz. The award received by Mercedes AMG Powertrains represents the tribute for a long and rich history of automotive innovation for the Stuttgart-based company.
For Mercedes-Benz the association between hybrid technology and motorsport goes back over a century, until 1907. 102 years later, the Mercedes-Benz KERS hybrid system powered Lewis Hamilton when he won the first Formula One Hybrid victory in 2009, at the Hungarian Grand Prix.
Dr. Thomas Weber, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development agreed that “winning the Dewar Trophy is the result of hard and excellent teamwork. Formula 1 is the most intense development laboratory in the world: new technologies are pursued vigorously and quickly, more than in any other development environment worldwide.”
The Dewar Trophy is only awarded in years when the Club’s expert committee considers that there are valuable contenders, and the winners will be joining a remarkable line-up of automotive greats.Furthermore, in the Dewar Trophy’s 108 year history there have been 43 recipients – and only four from the Formula One industry.
Mercedes-Benz High Performance Engines won the Dewar Trophy in 2009 with its Formula One Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems (KERS) and in 2014, the Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains (HPP) with the PU106A Hybrid Formula One Power Unit.
