The Mercedes-Benz Concept EQA has just set wheels in Sicily. It runs along the winding roads, surrounded by the majestic landscapes of the Southern island, ahead of its debut set for 2019. The EQA will come to battle the BMW’s i3 in the world of the electric premium compacts.
The Mercedes-Benz has started its EQ offensive, testing the prototype of the future series model EQA across Europe, ahead of entering series production of the company’s Hambach plant. Daimler has recently announced major investments in the production center, of $600 million.
The video released by Mercedes-Benz reveals the LED headlights and the front glass panel that replaces the radiator grille of the conventional cars, horizontally split in two by a 3D line in a shade of blue that seems to support the digital three-pointed star. In sporty driving conditions, the glass panel turns red. Below the logo, there lies an apron-like backlit louver. The rear design mirrors the front, with OLED taillights and a backlit louver, that is also visible on the sides.
There is no new detail on the interior of the future compact car, but it should integrate the company’s all-new MBUX advanced infotainment system.
There are two electric motors, one engaging each of the axles, thus providing all wheel drive, with a total output of over 270 horsepower and a peak torque of 500 Nm. The figures propel the car from a standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5 seconds and ensure a range of 400 kilometers.
The EQA will be standing on the MEA (Mercedes Electric Architecture) especially designed for the electric models, supporting front-, rear- and all-wheel drive.
Mercedes has trademarked designations such as the EQA, EQB, EQC and EQS to join the all-electric sub-brand EQ, which will include 10 models, all launched before 2025.
