The time has come for Mercedes-Benz to throw a big party in the crossover world. The premium carmaker confirmed they will be revealing three new models: the GLC Coupe, GLB, and GLA this week.
The Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe will drop first and it will happen today. The Germans have teased the second generation of the model on social media. The teaser photo shows the updated taillight design and the sloping roofline, a feature typical of this type of body style.
Most likely, there will be a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster on board, in the company of the 11.9-inch infotainment display with the latest gen MBUX as standard.
It will carry over the engine lineup from its standard sibling. Customers will thus be able to choose one of the turbocharged four-cylinder gas and diesel versions or one of the three plug-in hybrids. The range-topping version, if we leave the AMG version out of this, of course, boasts 381 PS (376 HP). Meanwhile, the most affordable version will be the GLC 300 with 204 PS.
The GLB facelift is also coming this week, but on Thursday, March 16. The teaser shows the angular crossover from a distance. We should not expect anything radical in terms of design. But Mercedes is planning to show new headlights and taillights design. The latest generation o the MBUX system is also part of the update plan. The GLB will be available, just like now, as a five- and a seven-seater.
The updated Mercedes GLA will also be unveiled on Thursday, 16 March. We should expect new headlights, taillights and a redesigned bumper, just like in the GLB.
The Mercedes GLA and GLB facelift, as well as the AMG GLB 35 and AMG GLA 35/45 sports versions, will be available for sale starting this summer.
These are the last mods Mercedes will be operating before switching to new generations. The Germans will come up with a new-gen GLA/GLB after 2024. They will both be based on the new MMA platform, specifically designed with electric propulsion in mind. The first model on the MMA platform will be the new Mercedes-Benz CLA. coming in 2024.
The MMA architecture can also withstand hybrid propulsion. ICEs for it will be developed by Mercedes and produced by Geely in China in a completely new plant. These engines will feature a stoichiometric ratio of 14.7:1 over a wide rev range, making them very economical and clean. These power units and a hybrid system based on them will also be used in the Volvo XC40 in the future.
