Mercedes-Benz produced the 20-millionth vehicle manufactured in Sindelfingen, the 100 year old factory. The jubilee car is a Mercedes-Benz S 500 e.
Sindelfingen is the cradle for upper range and luxury class vehicles from Mercedes. The plant celebrates its 100th anniversary this year.
The production started in 1915 with airplanes and airplanes engines and continued with the production of vehicle bodies. Mercedes-Benz started to manufacture complete cars in Sindelfingen in 1946. The S-Class generations have been built at the Sindelfingen plant since Mercedes-Benz 220 was launched in the spring of 1951.
Markus Schaffer, Member of the Divisional Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Cars, Production and Supply Chain Management has declared: “We are confident that we will produce the next twenty million cars a lot faster. By 2020, we will invest a total of 1.5 billion euros in an ultramodern and flexible production facility here in Sindelfingen. This will allow us to offer our customers even more options for individualization and to safeguard our top quality. Our focus continues to be on our workforce – we are reducing the degree of automation. At the same time, we are applying modern robots that work hand in hand with our employees without a protective fence, and which assist them with strenuous tasks.”
26,000 people works at Sindelfingen plant and 367,313 cars were produced last year here. The list of the cars produced last year in Sindelfingen include C, E, S-Class, CLS, CLS Shooting Brake, SLS AMG and Mercedes-AMG GT. Over 250 cars roll off the production lines every day.
The first car completely produced at the Sindelfingen plant was 170 S Cabriolet A, which was built between 1949 and 1951. Other legendary cars produced here were 300 SL Gullwing, 190 SL, Ponton and the last sport cars from Mercedes – SLS AMG and Mercedes-AMG GT.
Dieter Zetsche, Daimler CEO has declared: “The 20 million cars from Mercedes-Benz plant in Sindelfingen would stretch two and a half times around the world.
The jubilee car was a Mercedes S 500 e Plug-In Hybrid, the first Plug-In Hybrid from Mercedes-Benz and the first one from a list of ten Plug-In models to be launched in the next 3 years together with the GLE 500 e and C 350 e.
