The Polish daily newspaper Rzeczpospolita announced yesterday that Mercedes would open a 800 million euro Mercedes engine plant near Jawor in Poland.
The information has not been confirmed by Mercedes officials.
In the beginning of March, Markus Schaeffer, the head of Mercedes production informed that the company is looking for a location for a new plant. According to the Polish business paper Puls Bisnesu, Daimler is considering Poland instead of Russia for a new car plant. The same rumours from the Ppolish press mentioned that the final decision will be taken before the end of April 2016.
In the same time, we announced that Daimler has also acquired a huge piece of land of 140,000 sqm near the new Mercedes gearbox plant in Sebeş, in the western part of Romania, for a possible engine plant.
Dieter Zetsche, the Daimler CEO, has mentioned, in an interview for mercedesblog.com, at the Geneva Motor Show, that if Mercedes would build a new plant in Europe, the location would not be within Germany, because the growth does not come from there.
Jawor city from Poland was mentioned in the Polish press for a possible location for a Mercedes engine plant after Jawor lost the race for the new Jaguar/Land Rover plant, which will eventually be located in Nitra, Slovakia.
Asked about the investment, Prime Minister Beata Szydło told in a news conference on Monday: “We are in talks with various investors, we endeavor to create work places, particularly in regions where there’s high unemployment. At the moment, I can say that there are talks underway with various entities.”
The new plant woul bring 1,500 workplaces.
According to the same Polish newspaper Rzeczpospolita, Mercedes has considered three locations in EU in Poland, Hungarz and Romania.
Mercedes runs a lot of activities in former Eastern and Central Europe. The plant from Kecskemet, Hungary is building the CLA and CLA Shooting Brake and in Sebeş, Romania, Mercedes is producing the new 9-speed automatic gearbox for the rear wheel drive models and the 7-speed dual clutch gearbox for the front wheel drive compact range.
