Mercedes Vision EQXX with a range of up to 1200 km

At the Mercedes-Benz strategy update conference, the german luxury manufacturer announced the Mercedes Vision EQXX program which prefigures an electric model with a range of up to 1,200 km.

For now, the Mercedes Vision EQXX is a technology program, which has a final target to build an electric vehicle with spectacular efficiency and range. To this end, the project will involve a multi-disciplinary team based in Stuttgart supported by specialists from the Mercedes-Benz F1 HPP group in the UK, who bring expertise in eMotors plus motorsport-inspired development speed.

The Mercedes strategy update conference presented the goal of covering the distance Stuttgart-Nice or Beijing-Shanghai with a single charge. If we look at google maps, between Shanghai and Beijing are 1,200 km which means that Mercedes aims at a range of up to 1200 km. How does Mercedes want to achieve this impressive result?

The first sketch of the Mercedes Vision EQXX reveals an extremely aerodynamic car, a very important aspect in reducing energy consumption.
Then, Mercedes relies on a new battery technology with cells with silicium anode. Development chief Markus Schafer confirmed to auto motor und sport magazine that Mercedes is working with partner Sila to develop anodes made of semiconductors for production cars.
Third, Mercedes is working on a new propulsion system with synchronous electric motors with permanent excitation coupled with 2-speed gearboxes and 800 V voltage.

Mercedes plans to electrify more than half of its range in 2030 and to have no thermal engine on offer in 2039.

Mercedes is currently working to increase the electrical range of PHEV models. Its new generations of PHEV models offer greater electrical range than all rivals. In the compact class, Mercedes offers an electric range of 74 km and in the class of luxury SUVs and limousines, the electric range reaches 100 km.
