Daimler announced that as the first model of the new smart generation, the smart fortwo rated at 71 hp is now available for ordering with the new twinamic dual clutch transmission.

Seen as a major improvement from the first smart generation, the twinamic dual clutch transmission will enable gear shifting to be carried out in two ways: either fully automatically or manually.

Manual shifting will be done by using the selector lever in a separate gate or by means of the shift paddles available with the optional Sports package. Furthermore, the dual clutch transmission system will be available in combination with the passion, prime, and proxy equipment lines.

The 71 hp smart fortwo will be the first model to receive the twinamic transmission as of March 2015. This solution will enable the model to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 15.1 seconds and reach a top speed of 151 km/h.

According to Daimler, the combined fuel consumption figure stands at 4.1 l/100 km, while CO2 emissions are rated at 94 g/km. The twinamic automatic transmission is designed as a 3-shaft dual clutch manual transmission and has six forward gears and one reverse gear.

According to officials, both clutch actuation and gear changing are fully automatic and enable particularly smooth shifting without any interruption in tractive power. When required, the electronic controller skips individual gears instead of changing down through each individual gear.

The additional charge for the twinamic in Germany in the standard version is 1,275 euros.
