The all-new Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance is here. It proudly stands as the company’s most powerful series production model. That is before the Mercedes-AMG ONE hits the streets.
Mercedes-AMG 63 S E Performance comes with the company’s 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine of 639 horsepower at the front. But that is far from over. A 204-horsepower electric motor found its way to the rear axle. This motor is integrated with an electrically shifted two-speed transmission and an electronically controlled limited-slip rear differential. Experts refer to this layout as a P3 hybrid. These are the parameters that take the car all the way to 843 horsepower and a peak system torque of 1,400 Nm. A belt-driven starter-generator provides the car with extra 14 horsepower.
Engineers also fitted it with carbon-ceramic brakes with 420-millimeter front discs and six-piston calipers at the front and 380-millimeter discs with single-piston calipers at the rear. 20-inch wheels adorn the front axle, while there are 21-inch wheels at the rear.
With all in, it runs from zero to hero (that is 100 km/h or 62 mph) in just 2.9 seconds. The odometer needle stops at a top speed of 316 km/h.
The electric motor draws energy from a 6.1-kWh high-performance battery that weighs only 89 kilograms. There is an onboard 3.7 kW AC charger, designed for fast power delivery. Therefore, the Mercedes-AMG 63 S E Performance can drive with zero emissions for 12 kilometers.
The battery pack makes use of a high-tech coolant with non-conductive liquid. It flows around all the 560 cells making the battery, cooling them individually with approximately 14 liters. It thus keeps an optimal temperature of 45 degrees within the pack.
Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance with seven driving modes
The MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) comes standard with hybrid-specific displays. The instrument cluster displays parameters such as electric range, the power consumption, the output and torque of the electric motor and the temperatures of the battery and electric motor.
Seven driving modes are available onboard. These are: Electric, Comfort, Sport, Sport+, Race, Slippery and Individual. The E Performance hybrid starts silently (“Silent Mode”) in the Comfort driving mode when the electric motor is on.
The all-new Mercedes-AMG 63 S E Performance comes standard with AMG Ride Control+ air suspension with automatic level control and adaptive electronically-controlled adjustable damping.
Four different regeneration levels
The driver can select four different regeneration levels, by using the right-hand AMG button on the steering wheel. In Level 0, the model acts similarly to a conventional combustion engine with manual transmission. At the opposite end, Level 3 involves maximum energy recovery. Thus the so-called “one-pedal” driving is possible, similar to that of an all-electric car.
In “RACE” driving mode though, regeneration is automatically set at level 1.
Furthermore, the car does not speed up when driving downhill. Therefore, the system works like an engine brake. Yet it directs energy into the battery unit.
