Elon Musk has set the date for the presentation of the Tesla Model Y, the Mercedes-EQ C rival. It is March 15th, 2019. The information has been delivered to a curious fan via Twitter. “15th of March, Ides of March, I made that up!”, Elon Musk admitted. It is the date corresponding to the assassination of Julius Caesar.

Elon Musk was taken way too seriously when he joked on Twitter saying that the Model Y will see the light of day at the „Ides of March”. “I just made that up, because Ides of March sounds good. But consider it real. We could unveil Model Y anytime from late this year to mid next year, so March 15 is about right”, he continued.

Tesla Model Y will be the electric crossover ready to take on the Mercedes-EQ C. Placed below the Model X, which is bigger and more upmarket, the Model Y is Tesla’s manner of responding to the high demand of crossovers.

According to Musk’s statement, the Model Y is getting its very own platform, with a completely new architecture, not the Model 3 platform, as previously speculated. Inside information shows that this new platform is set to redduce costs and facilitate the already bumpy production, especially for the Model 3, whose manufacturing process stopped three times this year.

Musk has admited that the new platform would only require 328 feet (100 meters) of cable, instead of the 5,000 feet (1,525 meters) necessary for the sedan. The new model will ditch the 12V battery system in favor of a whole new one.

If all goes according to plan, which hasn’t happened at Tesla lately, the production for Model Y should kick off by the end of 2019.
