Two soldiers are fighting the war of the hot hatches. The VW Golf 7R and the Mercedes A 45 AMG. How close can such a battle be? 3, 2, 1… And here they go!

The Golf sets off like a rocket, but not before long, the A 45 AMG takes the lead. Will the German premium car outrun its bold rival? That is for you to find out!

Small engines and tremendous amounts of power. The car manufacturers have figured out how to do that. It’s 265 kW for the 4-cylinder 2-liter turbo in the A 45 AMG and 206 kW for the same 2-liter turbo displacement in the Golf 7R. They set up the all-wheel drive, to keep them standing and running the right way.

The Golf was in great disadvantage ever since the very start of the race organized by the journalists from South Africa, since it does not feature a launch control system. And talking about aces up the sleeve for the Mercedes, we should include here the 59 kW power and the 70 Nm torque difference (380 Nm for the Golf, 450 Nm for the Mercedes) as well.

But with a reputation of being a giant slayer – it has recently trashed the Subaru WRX STI – and having less weight to drag (1980 kg is the weight of the Golf, while the Mercedes is 2050 kg), the Volkswagen was still hoping whatsoever.

And when it comes to prices, the people in Mercedes gave the A 45 AMG a run for its money: the A costs a bit over 48 000 euros, while its counterpart slightly reaches the 39 000 euros mark.

There is a 6.9 l/100 km average fuel consumption for the Golf, but the figures go a bit higher for the AMG engine: 7,1 l/100 km. The Volkwagen runs the 0-100 km in 5.0 seconds and it is only 4.6 seconds for the premium brand car. The top speed for both is 250 km/h.

And now that we know the winner warrior, we can obviously proclaim the A 45 AMG the king of the hot hatches!
