Inching closer to their mid-cycle refresh, the Mercedes-AMG GT models will be ready in time for 2020. The Affalterbach-based company is planning to fit its models with a new six-cylinder power unit, as a new entry-level variant.
One of the prototypes recently caught testing features four round exhaust pipes, a design used specifically for six-cylinder AMGs, such as the GT 43 4-Door Coupe, the E 53 or the CLS 53. This leads to the assumption that the upcoming models might get the 3.0-liter turbocharged inline 6 and a mild-hybrid system, falling in the spot of an entry-level model.
AMG might as well take the power higher to reduce the gap between this unit and the 4.0-liter V8, available with 576 and 585 horsepower. Now the 3.0-liter engine develops 435 horsepower in the AMG 53 models recently launched, the E 53 and the AMG 53.
The spy photographs display a coupe and a roadster. The front fascia is not masked by camouflage, since they seem to sport the current radiator grille and headlights. The V8 biturbo logo shows on the side of the red roadster, but is missing on the white coupe, which is another hint to the possible new powertrain.
If AMG picks up its pace, the model with the new powertrain might be ready in time for the Los Angeles Motor Show this November. The newly-powered AMGs are expected to hit the showrooms in the first half of 2019. The top-of-the-range Black Series model and a track-focused GT R Clubsport have already been confirmed for the near future, but not before 2020.
