At the North American Auto Show 2007 in Detroit, Mercedes-Benz wanted to prove one more time its role as pioneer and design trendsetter. For that, the Mercedes Ocean Drive convertible concept was up to the challenge.
Ocean Drive concept’s biggest advantage was that the Mercedes-Benz engineers had no constraints regarding any technical and production specifications. Because of that, they managed to create a prototype which, according to Mercedes, was “the most confortable and most elegant convertible in the world.”
The Concept Ocean Drive was basically a four-door luxury convertible and introduced an interesting array of technical highlights. Firstly, the cabriolet used headlamps and rear lights with LED technology. Secondly, it brought an innovative soft-top mechanism which permitted a quick and easy opening and closing sequence. Last but not least, a new AIRSCARF headroom heating system was introduced on all the four seats.
The cabriolet’s design was based on a very large vertical radiator grille, two-tone finish for the bodywork and a combination of sharp lines and smooth surfaces.
The luxurious atmosphere was most emphasized inside, as the Concept Ocean Drive received valuable materials such as high-grade leather, fabrics with a 3D appearance and large bird’s eye maple surfaces used as trim.
Regarding the powertrain, the prototype was based on the Mercedes-Benz S 600 with its twelve-cylinder engine and long wheelbase. In addition, the design study was equipped with safety systems like PLUS Brake Assist, DISTRONIC PLUS and radar sensors as well as the PRE-SAFE occupant protection system.
