Mercedes-Benz wanted to show the world how its CLS can inspire future shapes and used the 2010 Auto China in Beijing to express that, using its latest prototype at that time: the Concept Shooting Brake.

When first presented in front of the audience in Beijing, the Shooting Brake concept was a surprise thanks to its proportions, which although reminded of the CLS, was looking to a new direction, as it used elements from the SLS AMG sports car.

The Shooting Brake concept featured a wide, low-silhouette, with a long bonnet and a roof which follows through to the rear. The “shooting brake” denomination is taken from a British type of automobile, one that used to combine the style and image of a coupe with the practical characteristics of an estate in terms of luggage storage.

Mercedes-Benz opted for a 3.5-litre direct injection V6 engine with 60 degrees cylinder angle, capable of offering 306 hp and a maximum torque of 370 Nm. The engine was set to be the forerunner of the forthcoming V-engine generation from Mercedes-Benz.

In terms of technology, the Shooting Brake used full-LED headlamps, offering for the first time all the known dynamic light functions in LED technology.

The new light system featured the Intelligent Light System – already tried and tested in Mercedes models with bi-xenon headlamps – with its five light functions: country lights, motorway lights, enhanced fog lights, active curve lights and cornering lights.
