In times of downsizing and electrification, there is an engine that will probably always bring candid memories to the AMG fans. Performance enthusiasts are still nostalgic about the 6.2-liter V8. To comfort that longing, AutoTopNL takes a Mercedes C63 AMG Estate (W204) out on the autobahn.

Long gone is the 6.2-liter V8 that used to power the AMG cars of the golden era. In the meantime, a 4.0-liter V8 replaced the glorious mill under the hood of the high-performance C version, while the C43 got a 3.0-liter inline-six. And things are soon to change, because a 2.0-liter four-cylinder Mercedes-AMG C63 is in the works. But there are still cars out there that remind us all that downsizing wasn’t even an option. This W204 Mercedes C63 AMG is one of them.

Out there on the perfect tarmac, the car flashes its way to 200 km/h (124 mph) with no effort whatsoever. And that’s not all, folks. The needle of the speedometer almost hits 260 km/h (161.6 mph).

The W204 C63 AMG came with a seven-speed automatic transmission that delivered 457 PS (451 HP) and 600 Nm (443 pound-feet) of torque to the rear axle. Mercedes accounted the model with a run from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.4 seconds and a top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph).

Michael Schumacher used to drive a Mercedes C63 AMG Estate

The car was so intriguing that even Michael Schumacher used to drive one. It was a company car from the moment the German iconic driver joined Mercedes GP Petronas Formula 1 Team back in 2010. That particular car went under the hammer this year in a Bonhams auction and sold for 27,600 euros ($29,733 at the current exchange rates).

For those still longing for this 6.2-liter V8 force of nature, Mercedes has a bit of a consolation. With a 2.0-liter and an electric motor, the Mercedes-AMG C63 is expected to get around 600 PS. Will it sound like this V8? You already know the answer to that question.
