Mercedes confirmed the arrival of an electric G-Class as being imminent. Therefore, the zero-emission off-roader would bear the EQG designation and would come to battle the American Hummer.

An electric Mercedes-Benz G-Class should come with the designation of EQG, following the nomenclature strategy of the premium car maker. Daimler’s CEO, Ola Kallenius, confirmed its arrival back in 2018. But the Swedish head of the brand never went further with a possible date of the launch.

This spring, Mercedes has made yet another step into electrifying the G-Class. The car maker also secured the EQG designations, filing patents for two variants: EQG 560 and EQG 580. This confirms that the luxury boxy SUV is inching closer to a new transformation.

The latter variant should get a two-electric engine configuration, similar to that of the EQS 580 4MATIC. The luxury electric benefits from the presence of 516 horsepower and of a peak torque of 850 Nm. We should expect the same figures in the electric G-Class. The EQG 560 variant though should stand towards the base of the range.

The three locking diffs that the G-Class with internal combustion engines features, should remain in place in the electric variant. But it remains to be seen if the Hummer-competitor will get the company’s new EVA architecture or Mercedes will chose to improvise on its current platform.

The Mercedes EQG carries over the front fascia of the EQ models

All the information speculated for the past couple of years sparked the imagination of the fans of the off-road icon. Its electric variant should break cover sometime in 2023. But until the moment comes, enthusiasts have to settle for a render that superrrendercars delivers. They took their digital creation to Instagram and drew plenty of attention. The render carries over the angular lines of the G-Class, but takes the front fascia with the enclosed front grille from the EQ range.
