There is no turning back now. What used to be a rumor is now becoming a certainty. Mercedes has filed a patent for the designation of the future G-Class. As expected, it will hit the market under the EQG designation.

Mercedes-Benz is currently working on an electric version of the G-Class. The iconic off-roader has always been famous for its potent engines. It is now going to be a star among the “green” vehicles as well. The premium car maker has recently filed a patent application with the European Union Intellectual Property Office. The EUIPO received the registration on April 1st, 2021 and it is no joke whatsoever. Daimler’s CEO, Ola Kallenius, indicated that the arrival of an electric G-wagon is imminent. He never gave any information on the approximate date of the launch though.
The electric G-Class – what powertrain will it get?
The boxy SUV, an enemy of aerodynamics, although ever improving, will come as an electric model in the EQG 580 and EQG 560 variants. There is no official data on the two. But the numbers should be hints that the zero-emission G-Class will get the same powertrain configurations as the upcoming EQS luxury sedan. The car expected to arrive in showrooms worldwide in August will come in EQS 450+ and EQS 580 4MATIC variants.
We could thus expect two electric motors on the EQG 580, one on each of the axles, securing the four-wheel drive. They should deliver together about 516 horsepower (385 kW) and a torque of 850 Nm.
The three locking differentials, that the G-Class with the internal combustion engines benefits from, will keep their ground in the electric version as well. What is yet uncertain is the choice of chassis that Mercedes-Benz will make. They will have to choose from the company’s new EVA architecture, especially designed for electric vehicles, and the ladder-frame chassis currently used.
