The Mercedes-AMG G 63 has been spotted testing in Germany and sporting the AMG typical radiator grille, the Panamericana. It would be the first off-roader to wear it. Yet the first Mercedes-AMG SUV to bear it was the GLC 63 Coupe.
Even though it runs covered in layers and layers of black and white camo, the prototype filmed testing has just the features that indicate that there is a Panamericana radiator grille hiding at the front end of the high-performance G, flanked by the round LEDs that keep their original shape.
For the moment, the G 63 and the G 65 still carry the horizontal grille design supporting the three-pointed star logo, but the new models will stand in line with the AMG new grille design.
The off-roader recently displayed in Detroit is set to ditch the 5.5-liter V8 biturbo engine in favor of the downsized 4.0-liter V8 biturbo unit, capable to churn out 612 horsepower, sent to all wheels via a 9-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT automatic gearbox. Yet, the 6.0-liter V12 is still in the cards for the G 65 variant.
LIVE from Detroit – Master G is back! This is the 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class
Rougher, tougher, bigger, yet 170-kilogram thinner, taller and wider, the G is obviously more spacious and featuring a newly redesigned interior, so we can expect a brand-new cabin for the AMG model as well.
It will take a few months before the top-of-the-range G-Class sees the light of day, that is not going to be here sooner than next spring.
