6. Mercedes-Benz SL 73 AMG – 85 units, 1999
The 7.3 liter V12 from AMG, code name M120, is a famous engine. Before AMG supplied Pagani with the huge displacement engine to use in their super sports car Zonda, Mercedes used it for one of their models: the super exclusive SL 73 AMG built in only 85 units between 1999 and 2001.
The ordering procedure was also unique. You had to purchase first a Mercedes-Benz SL 600 and than hand it over to AMG which replace the engine with the huge 7.23 liter for around 100,000 DM.
The SL 73 AMG was one of the last versions of the R129 Mercedes-Benz SL, which was replaced by the R 230 in 2001.
